Lawrenceville is the second oldest city in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. It was incorporated on December 15, 1821 by the Georgia General Assembly. William Maltbie, the first postmaster of the city, suggested its present name. The city is named after an American naval commander in the War of 1812, James Lawrence. The first permanent courthouse of Lawrenceville was constructed in 1824. The present courthouse, however, was built in 1885.
